The Men in the
First Photograph

Where it started, in 1960
There is a picture in the family archive, sepia and cracked at the corners, of five men in pale suits. Nobody in it is still singing.
They came up in the quartet convention circuit of South Carolina, in an era when gospel groups moved church to church with their suits pressed and their harmonies tight — a tradition of close-harmony singing built on Sunday programs, anniversary services and long drives between them.
Everything The Flying Clouds do today started in that room.
The name kept travelling
The group carried on through the decades and through generations of the same family — sons stepping into parts their fathers sang, the repertoire growing but the core of it unchanged.
By the 1970s the group was working with a P.O. Box on the back of its promo photographs and a schedule that ran across the Carolinas.
1999 — today
Onto the festival circuit
A gospel quartet from a South Carolina church circuit found a second audience on roots and americana stages — the same songs, a bigger field.
Still on the road
The current lineup plays festivals, church programs and private events across the East — as a full band, or as an acoustic duo when the room calls for it. In 2026 the group was nominated for a Stellar Award.
